A tenugui made from high-quality, absorbent cotton. It is printed on one side in blue with white dragonflies. The rich blue print gives the tenugui a slight matte sheen. The densely woven fabric has a smooth, even texture and a soft feel. The edges are unhemmed.
The dragonfly has a special meaning in Japanese culture, featuring in haiku poems, games and stories. In Japanese myths about the creation of the Japanese islands, one of them is called ‘Akizu’, which means dragonfly. It is also a symbol of the samurai, as the hair of young warriors was braided into a dragonfly knot. In Shintoism, the dragonfly was regarded as the spirit of the rice plant, heralding a rich harvest in autumn. The Japanese poet and children's book author Rufo Miki wrote the song ‘Akatombo’ (‘Red Dragonfly’), which is still very well known in Japan today.
