Madake Bambus
Madake bamboo grows to 8 -12 cm in diameter within 3 to 4 years. It is harvested between October and February. The bamboo is exposed to the four seasons when it grows in Japan, this makes it extremely tough. Compared to Keichiku bamboo, it is slightly dry and splinters build up faster. However, only the finest fibres of the bamboo are used for this shinai. The shinai does not break and the splinters can be removed easily. Regular maintenance with Shinai knife and oil are the best way to give them a long life.
